Assistant Legal Navigator I - Self-Help Center
Part-Time
The Part-Time Assistant Legal Navigator plays a vital role in helping members of the public understand their legal options, rights, and the steps required to address civil legal matters. Working under the supervision of senior legal navigators and attorneys, this position supports clients as they navigate legal procedures, forms, and available resources.
This entry-level role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the legal field while contributing to the Center’s mission of increasing access to justice for self-represented individuals. The Assistant Legal Navigator helps ensure that clients feel informed, supported, and empowered as they work through their legal challenges.
Work Environment: Office-based, with a focus on providing administrative support to Legal Navigators and the Director at the self-help center.
Flexible hours based on the needs of the office and department. The typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, 8:45 AM to 4:45 PM, with occasional Fridays from 8:45 AM to 12:00 PM.

Key Responsibilities
Client Support & Legal Guidance
Assist clients in understanding basic legal processes and available options
Provide general information on court procedures, filing requirements, and deadlines
Help clients gather and organize necessary documentation for legal matters
Communication & Intake
Answer phone calls, emails, and in-person questions in a professional and timely manner
Schedule appointments and coordinate with legal professionals, clients, and other stakeholders
Document & Resource Management
Maintain organized client records, case files, and related documentation
Guide clients in using online legal resources and self-help platforms
Conduct basic legal research under the supervision of senior staff
Confidentiality & Compliance
Ensure all client information is handled in accordance with confidentiality and ethical standards
Uphold professionalism and accuracy when assisting the public
Administrative Support
Provide general clerical and administrative assistance to the legal team
Assist with preparing forms, letters, and client-facing materials
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Associate's or Bachelor's degree (concentration in legal studies or related field preferred)
OR a minimum of 4 years of experience in a legal services role
Experience
1–2 years of experience in a legal environment, customer service, or administrative support role.
Experience with legal document preparation or court procedures is a plus
Skills
Strong interest in law and legal processes.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage time efficiently and handle multiple tasks.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
Empathy and a commitment to helping others.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic knowledge of legal software is a plus.
